This two-tiered cake was done for a baby shower,
where the new baby’s nursery theme is baby, wild, African animals, and the mom-to-be loves giraffes.
The square bottom tier is my delectable chocolate cake and chocolate butter icing, covered in white sugar paste and decorated with edible ink, hand drawn baby animals on sugar paste panels, and moulded sugar paste bows.
Here are the four panels before I put them on the cake:
And here are some work-in-progress pictures of the giraffe cake topper, sculpted with sugar paste and hand painted, by me, without the use of any moulds.
Making the giraffe was a three day process, and I used several pictures of sleeping giraffes so I could study it from all angles while I was forming the sugar paste and then painting on the markings.
The proportions aren’t perfect, but I was very pleased with how it turned out.
These vanilla cupcakes with vanilla butter icing are decorated with pink glitter and little baby-themed sugar paste cupcake toppers, and the pink velvet cupcakes are topped with cream cheese icing and baby-themed decorations.
This cake was a surprise for Kim’s baby shower – Kim is a regular customer of mine so I was thrilled when her mom asked me to do a nursery-themed cake for her.
The cake under the sugar paste is my delicious carrot cake with cream cheese icing, and when it came out of the oven it smelled so good I very nearly ate a whole layer just like that – but I didn’t have enough nuts to bake another one for Christine’s order so I had to resist temptation!
The cot and all its extras – the lace, blankets, cushions and all – are made of sugar paste and completely edible! The nursery was also built on its own little board so Kim should have been able to lift it off and keep it if she wants to.
