I was very lucky here in that my customer said they wanted a dog-shaped cake, and the rest was up to me.
After a bit of a Christmas holiday I felt like challenging myself a little, and I’d seen several really cute Pug cakes on the internet so a Pug it had to be!
It’s not quite perfect… The proportions are a little off, and the head-shape isn’t quite right, but I am REALLY pleased with how it turned out.
The dog’s body is chocolate cake and white chocolate butter icing, and the dog’s head is rice krispy treat – sculpted and shaped by hand, not baked in a mould.
The whole dog is covered with fondant and painted to add shadows and shading and the Pug’s colouring.
This is my Godmother’s birthday cake, and she was thrilled!
She’s a keen bird watcher, and I was lucky in that she said I could do the cake any way I pleased, as long as the Pel’s Fishing Owl – her favourite bird – was on the cake somehow.
Before I settled on the chocolate cake tree stump with a rice krispy treat owl, I considered doing a simple cake decorated with sugar paste owls, and I considered doing a 3D owl in cake, but I really wanted to try the tree stump!
I used Zoe’s Fancy Cakes tutorials for the tree stump, which I have been dying to try, and I am very pleased with my final result.
