Elanie celebrated her 21st birthday this weekend with a double party! Her mom arranged the cupcake order with me in the weeks prior to the parties, to match the theme and Elanie’s taste.
On Saturday night she had a bash with her friends with a classy silver and white theme. For this party I made mouth watering vanilla cupcakes in silver paper cups with a variety of secret centres- fudge, creme caramels, coconut ice, malted biscuit balls and a berry nougat. I topped them with my delectable white vanilla butter icing and a little glitter, a black fondant flower with a white centre, and a silver fondant “21” mounted upright on a white fondant disc. I added some small silver dragees for some extra sparkle.
And for the first time, I made a cake for a customer! I have always baked my son’s birthday cakes, but I’ve never done one for someone else. This one is a vanilla sponge cake with a caramel filling and white vanilla butter icing covering it. I decorated with with the same black flowers as I used on the cupcakes and put Elanie’s name on top of the cake in silver fondant lettering mounted on white fondant.
On Sunday, Elanie celebrated with her family. The green and purple colour scheme was very striking, and after chatting to Elanie’s mom I mounted a green and purple “21” on green and purple fondant discs to stand upright on the cupcakes. Daleen, Elanie’s mom, asked for a multi-coloured flower garden using fondant daisies on top of alternating green and purple vanilla butter icing and provided the green and purple polkadot cupcake collars. These little beauties were also vanilla cupcakes with several different secret centres.
Happy birthday Elanie!
I hope your celebratory weekend was all you hoped it would be!
Charmain contacted me a couple of weeks before her wedding after she had a bit of a cupcake crisis!
Their wedding colour was turquoise and she had seen cupcakes on the web with a bright blue cherry on them. She wanted the same for her wedding but unfortunately the cherries in the pictures she found are not available in SA.
I experimented with a few things to make the cherries blue… to no avail. In the end, after agreeing it with Charmain, I contacted Dilene at Salon de Culinaire, and she made 120 chocolate truffles and dipped them in turquoise ganache. I then topped Charmain’s chocolate cupcakes and carrot cupcakes with white butter icing, a turquoise truffle and a little fondant leaf.
Charmain supplied the black cupcake collars.
Salon de Culinaire also made a carrot cake covered in white fondant and decorated with a turquoise fondant ribbon for Charmain’s novelty cake topper!
I made strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese icing, chocolate cupcakes with a creme-caramel secret centre topped with chocolate butter icing and chocolate discs and rolls, and I made vanilla cakes- some with secret centres- topped with white vanilla butter icing, red fondant hearts and black fondant music notes and symbols.
I had special cupcake wrappers made with a red and white
paisley theme and our monogram in purple on the front.
Instead of cutting a cake, we only had my cupcakes
and we fed one to each other after the ceremony!
My mom and sisters helped me ice and decorate them the night before
the wedding, and we had great fun in my kitchen.
Two weeks after the wedding, we had a Trash-The-Dress shoot,
and we started in my kitchen where I was “baking” cupcakes!
You can see some of those photos here!
